Working
3:00 pm
Event by The Mendel Center at Lake Michigan College
Sun. March 12, 2023 | 3:00pm
Take a fresh look at how everyday people roll up their sleeves and get the job done. The musical production of “Working” reveals the experiences of everybody from teachers to truck drivers, ironworkers to millworkers, and housewives to CEOs through pop songs, monologues, and scenes that explore what it is to work a job in America today. Best of all, it keeps evolving. This production of “Working” is a unique, localized version, drawing upon interviews with people who live and work in southwest Michigan.
In the 1970s, Stephen Schwartz (“Godspell, “Wicked,” “Pippin”) worked with a team of collaborators including James Taylor to create a musical based on Studs Terkel’s bestselling book of interviews “Working: People Talk About What They Do All Day and How They Feel About What They Do.” In 2012, the musical was updated with new songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda, and in 2023, Lake Michigan College is updating it with stories and interviews from the people who work in our own community.
Presented by the Lake Michigan College Visual & Performing Arts Department and directed by Dr. Patrick King, LMC Instructor of Theatre.
