LOCAL EVENTS

Clean Sweep is a free and non-regulatory program to help safely dispose of banned or unusable pesticides. Funding support is provided through a grant from the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.

ELIGIBILITY
Anyone in Michigan, such as home owners, farmers, greenhouses, nurseries, pesticide retailers, golf courses, etc.

ACCEPTED ITEMS
The Clean Sweep collections are for out-of-date, banned, or unwanted pesticides in Michigan, which include all the classes of “cides” – fungicides, herbicides, insecticides, and rodenticides. Fertilizers are NOT accepted as part of Clean Sweep unless they are a component of a pesticide formulation. Waste pesticides from out of state are NOT accepted.

REGISTRATION
For the collection program in Berrien County, participants must fill out a simple Registration Form (see on website). See registration deadline information below. You may also email Jaysen Field, Environmental Property Manager, or Genevieve Graves, Assistant Environmental Property Manager, at 269-983-7111, Ext. 8232 & Ext. 8133. Registration forms are also available to pick up at the Berrien, Cass, and Van Buren County MSU-Extension and Conservation District offices.

2023 CLEAN SWEEP COLLECTION DATES
Wednesday, June 21
Wednesday, July 26

Participants must register 2 weeks prior to the collection event.

EVENT LOCATION FOR BERRIEN/CASS/VAN BUREN COUNTY PARTICIPANTS
The local event takes place in Benton Harbor. Upon registration, participants will be contacted to schedule an approximate drop-off time and will be given specific drop-off location information and directions.

OTHER REGIONAL CLEAN SWEEP LOCATION
The other Clean Sweep site in the region, that is open to all Michigan participants, is at the Kalamazoo County Household Hazardous Waste Center. The Kalamazoo County program is available year around. Learn more about this program on the Kalamazoo website or call (269) 373-5211.

TIPS FOR SAFE TRANSPORT OF PESTICIDES
-Keep in original and labeled containers
-Don’t mix contents of unknown, unlabeled or different containers or different products
-Check for leaking containers; put leaking containers into clear plastic bags or leak proof outer containers
-Don’t transport with open tops
-Place in vehicle away from passengers
-Secure containers to prevent spills
